“Polishing Off the Slop” by Kevin Ridgeway

As grandfather would say,
polish off that cup of morning slop
and help me out in the shed
most of what we imbibe
in the early hours of the day
is sawdust squeaking by
in its masquerade as coffee
not corporate quality brew
or fair trade
causing us to go blind in a storm
of dizziness, writing bad poems
and painting our bedrooms
colors we regret
but it helps us rise
with the sun for each day

Kevin Ridgeway
is a writer from Southern California, where he lives in a shady bungalow with his girlfriend and their one-eyed cat. He attended a left leaning progressive liberal arts college in Vermont known as Goddard College, where his cookie cutter illusions and delusions of the world were completely shattered and he became a gentleman drunk and alternative scholar. Recent work has appeared or is forthcoming in Gloom Cupboard, Haggard & Halloo, Red FezCarcinogenic Poetry, Breadcrumb Scabs and Underground Voices Magazine, among others.
